Canada Lake and Lodge South Wales Wedding Photos

11 01 2011

Here we have a few dramatic images from Beth and Gregs wedding at Canada Lake and Lodge in Creigau, near Cardiff, South Wales.

Beacause of the stormy weather conditions I decided to convert many of the images to monochrome and make local contrast and sharpening adjustments to each image after dodging and burning in photoshop. I also used a couple of alien bee 1600W heads (powered with portable packs) that enabled a balanced foreground/background exposure.

Many photographers of a certain age frown at such digital image manipulation but I’ve always enhanced monochrome images and to this day still dodge, burn, acid wash and tone my darkroom wet prints. Image manipulation has always taken place just take a look at the brilliant Angus McBean’s work from the 1930′s – and he was Welsh :)

I’m of the opinion that our industry needs to be grabbed by the scruff of it’s neck and dragged into the 21st century. We have photographers who rarely photograph teaching students that will probably never become photographers – we also have dinosaurs sitting on judging panels who lack basic skills in digital imagery, and in some cases even in photography ! There are currently hoardes of former photographers (I say former because their main income now comes from tutoring rather than photography) setting up workshops and courses, selling seminars etc who really do not have a clue about modern digital image capture – there are a few exceptions of course, such as Martin Grahame-Dunn and Kevin Wilson but these are few and far between.

Although I still love analogue photography and getting my hands wet, we must all realise that digital imagery has arrived and will continue to progress with each release of photoshop, lightroom, DXO etc – this is a message to all photographers of my generation (I’m almost 50) – we all need to get with it !! – but always remember that photoshop will never magically create an amazing image from a poor one !!

Alanna and Rob were married on September the 18th 2010 at Bryngarw House, near Bridgend. Alanna prepared for the wedding in the upstairs bridal lounge at the hotel, while the reception was held in the marquee at the rear of the hotel. Photographs were shot in and around the grounds and gardens in varying weather conditions.

Tracey and Laurence ‘tied the Knot’ at Beer in Devon on 4th September 2010. On my arrival the weather was quite damp and misty, but just before the ceremony the mist lifted to reveal a overcast remainder to the day, together with the odd sunny interval. The happy couple honeymooned on a narrow boat in the Oxford area.

Hunters Lodge Brackla Bridgend : Sizzling Pubs

15 06 2010

Just returned from a lifestyle photoshoot at Ogmore by Sea. On our return I decided to treat the Thomas family to dinner at the Hunter’s Lodge pub restaurant in Brackla, Bridgend, which is part of the ‘Sizzling Pubs’ group.

Tuesday night is ‘curry night’ at the establishment so on our arrival we decided to order meals of the spicy variety (each accompanied with a free drink).

If you want to impress your clients then I recommend you don’t take them to the Hunter’s Lodge …. upon sending a side order of fries back, due to them being cremated and complaining about the curry being dry the manageress, Ellen Stenner, exclaimed .. “I suggest that if you require a real curry then you visit a proper Indian restaurant”… I requested a refund, and received a part refund, with the cost of the drinks deducted .. fantastic !!

I have taken Ms Stenners advice on board and will visit a proper Indian restaurant in future, or another local establishment where the customer service is hopefully better than that of the Hunter’s Lodge.

I also recommend that Ms Stenner of the Hunter’s Lodge complete a business training course .. or maybe the Sizzling Pubs group don’t offer them.

Toddler and Baby Photography : South Wales : Cardiff : Bridgend : Swansea : Newport

18 05 2010

Off to Southerndown today to photograph a couple of little toddlers with their mum. I love the ruins at Dunraven Castle and also the wooded area along the walk from Southerndown to Dunraven Bay.

My outdoor lifestyle sessions are proving very popular, and bookings for these sessions are up 75% on last year. I really love arriving at Merthyr Mawr or Southerndown very early on a spring or summer morning, when the light is at it’s golden best, and capturing wonderful natural lifestyle portraits.

Below are a couple of portraits taken of Rosie in the summer of 2009 at the ‘not so grand’ Brackla woods – just goes to show that you only really need some greenery for a backdrop and soft light to create good child portraits.

Wedding at Tedegar House

Wedding at Tedegar House

I have been a member of the UK based SWPP for sometime and agree that membership is well worth the £99.00 per year. I realise that opinions on photography, as well as any other art form, are subjective, but my personal belief is that the majority of clients that I meet prefer my documentary (photojournalistic) images other than the more staged (posed) examples.
I regularly enter the SWPP image competitions and over the last few months have gained numerous awards in the various wedding categories but really would like to enter more photojournalistic wedding images to a body that specialises in this subject matter.

Therefore I have just applied to join the WPJA as I feel that this organisation more befits my photojournalistic style.

I will continue my membership with the SWPP as I still believe that for traditional and classic wedding photography then it is still the best organisation available but look forward to how my WPJA membership application will unfold. I have recently uploaded a new website that contains a few of my reportage shots – to view please click the link below.
