Wedding Video South Wales : Cardiff : Bridgend : Swansea : Newport

New House Hotel Wedding Photos

I am often asked if I provide a wedding video service – I don’t – and in the following post I’ll try and explain why.

Firstly the main reason I do not offer wedding videography is that I am a qualified wedding photographer (not videographer) – would you employ a local plumber to build you a garden wall ?

I recently attended a trade show in Birmingham where I met with quite a few photographers who were considering offering a video service as part of their wedding photography packages. This is mainly due to the capability of top end DSLR’s ability to shoot HDR video. I think this can only have a negative effect on the service provided – shooting a wedding is difficult enough as it is without adding to the workload. Personally I think that you would be presented with a below average wedding video, and due to the extra workload, a sub standard set of wedding photographs – just think of the number of photo opportunities missed by shooting video and vice versa. This works both ways – many wedding videographers will consider offering a photography service by using a tool that can shoot both formats.

If you require a wedding videographer to video your South Wales wedding then Silver Birch Photography recommends that you contact Richard at Aurora Video. Richard offers a contemporary and unobstrusive style of wedding videography that thoroughly compliments our style of wedding photography. Aurora Video is based in Blackwood, Gwent, and just like Silver Birch Photography offers coverage throughout South Wales and the Westcountry including the Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend, Swansea, Bristol and Bath areas.

DIY Flash / Strobe Diffuser – Home made Diffuser and Snoot

1 01 2010

DIY Flash/Strobe Diffuser

This is a home made strobe diffuser that I made from a bottle of ASDA ECO-Fabric Conditioner (21 wash size) – see image below.

Home made strobe diffuser

I measured an area on the bottle between the two concave sides that closely matched the width of my strobe head (in my case a Canon 580EX mk11) and carefully marked around the bottle using a ruler and CD marker pen – see below.

DIY Strobe Diffuser

I then proceeded to cut the bottle around the marked line with a utility knife leaving me with the following :

diy diffuser

I then removed the labels from the bottle and smoothed any jagged edges left from cutting with fine sand paper.
The opening of the finished diffuser was slightly larger than the size of the 580EX but this was easily remedied by fixing in place with gaffer tape. I also found that the diy diffuser fitted snugly over a stofen omnibounce when attached to the strobe head – this resulted in even softer ‘wrap around light’ than using either the stofen or bottle diffuser on their own.

I am very pleased with the results obtained with this bottle diffuser for the following reasons :

1. Does not leave any color cast
2. Distributes beautiful soft even light
3. It’s very cheap – only £1.18 from ASDA and the contents make your clothes smell nice :)
4. The quality of the plastic is surprisingly good

I have tested this bottle diffuser under the same conditions alongside my stofen omni bounce and found the light to be softer from my diy diffuser than the stofen, although the results were even more pleasing using both diffusers by attaching the omnibounce to the strobe head first and then adding the diy diffuser.

As an afterthought maybe the top part of the bottle could be used as a strobe snoot simply by painting the inside with flat, matt black paint and attaching to the strobe as outlined above – I’d be interested if anybody out there tries this and would be very grateful if you shared your results. The bottle I used came from ASDA in the UK but I’m sure that there must be some sort of equivalent product available worldwide – the most important thing is to choose a bottle that will not impart any type of color cast to you images.
